You’re Loved – Pay it Forward
Love Demonstrated – Part 3
Scripture Reading: 1 John 4:7-12
Key Verse: 1 John 4:9
This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him.
As we continue to look at this passage of scripture, please note what kind of love was demonstrated: Sacrificial. God’s love for us came at a cost to God; He sent His one and only Son for our redemption. Humanly we ask what would motivate such sacrificial love. Because of our human thinking, we often think of the worthiness of the object of love. Were we worthy of this lavished love? Of course not, and we will never be worthy of it.
The Apostle Paul expressed the motivation of God’s love well: “God saved you by His grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it” (Ephesians 2:8-9). There is the driving force behind God’s love: Grace. Grace is a term that refers to our unearned favor. God extended His love to us who could never earn it; it was His gift to us!
Does God ask anything of us? Yes, we see it in 1 John 4:11, “Dear friends, since God loved us that much, we surely ought to love each other.” God asks us to “pay it forward.” Loving people with this Godlike love will take sacrifice; people can’t (and won’t) earn your love anymore than you earn God’s love. Father, I receive your great love, knowing how unworthy I am of it! I will pay it forward today to those around me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
