Scripture Reading: John 11:17-27
Key Verse: John 11:25
Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies
What is the condition of a corpse after four days? It is not uncommon to hear stories of someone dying and coming back to life after a few minutes. Those who experience this speak of floating above the operating room, watching people work on them, or some speak of a “light” that drew them. It’s one thing to have technically died for a few moments, but for four days?
Lazarus, a friend of Jesus, had died and by the time Jesus arrived, his friend had been in the tomb for four days. Martha, Lazarus’ sister, complained to Jesus that if He had been there at the “right” time Lazarus would not have died. Martha had a solid faith in the healing power of Jesus, but Jesus wanted her to go to another level of faith. Jesus turned to her and said: “I am the resurrection.” Jesus was referring to far more than returning Lazarus to a physical life. When Jesus called Lazarus out of the grave, it was only an illustration of the spiritual resurrection that He wanted everyone to understand. Lazarus would live a little longer on earth, but would die, physically, again. Jesus’ resurrection brought life after the grave to all who believe.
If you need physical healing from God, it is good to ask for that healing. But remember, our greatest need is to have Jesus’ resurrection life living in us so we’ll never die—in reality. For the Christ follower, we simply transfer from this temporal world to God’s eternal, timeless world. We live with resurrection power in our lives.
“Father, I see you by faith now. Soon I will come face to face with you and enjoy your presence forever because of Jesus. It’s in His Name I pray, amen.”
