Growing My Love
Scripture Reading: 1 John 4:16-20
Key Verse: 1 John 4:21
And he has given us this command: Whoever loves God must also love his brother.
Today we are looking at one of the key factors in keeping ourselves in God’s love: loving others. Maybe it surprises you that loving others does as much for you as it does for those to whom you show your love. Our heavenly Father is watching His children always. He sees how we relate to each other. Once we make our decision to be a Christ follower, then we must learn to show God’s love to those around us. When we do, we grow our own connection with God’s love.
John writes, in our additional reading section, “if anyone says, ‘I love God,’ yet hates his brother, he is a liar” (1 John 4:19). Wow! Tough and straight talk about this important issue. Our heavenly Father will not tolerate His children devouring each other with hateful words or actions. He knows that these words and actions are so un-Christ like, they take us out of the protective fort of God’s love, and leave us vulnerable to the enemy.
Grow your love today by showing God’s love to someone around you! Your heart will be enlarged for God. Your self-esteem will get a boost, as will the person you’ve blessed. Our love will never grow in isolation. This love of God and for God can’t expand in me simply by praying it will. I must add action to my prayers. I must extend myself for someone else. That is what Jesus did for all of us; extended Himself in His life and His death. Now, to grow His kind of love in us, we must model His actions!
Father, remind me today, when an opportunity comes, to give of myself to help someone or encourage someone by showing a God-like love toward them. In Jesus’ Name, amen.
