Every act of sacrificial service, help or encouragement directed at others, grows that love

Growing My Love
Laid Down Love – Part 1

Scripture Reading: 1 John 3:11-5

Key Verse: 1 John 3:16

This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers.

It would not be new truth to most of us to hear that repetition in weight lifting builds and tones muscles. Being disciplined about exercising will grow our strength and reduce our laziness. We have been asking how to grow our love. It should not surprise us that the real answer is found in repetition as well. Our key verse for today tells us that we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers. This is God’s definition of love. It was modeled by Jesus who “laid down” His love for us!

The Apostle Paul pleaded with the Christ followers in Rome to present their bodies as “living sacrifices” to God. This describes the ongoing process of laying down our lives for others around us. As we live this out—God’s kind of love—we grow that love within us! Every act of sacrificial service, help or encouragement directed at others, grows that love in our hearts. Today, as you go through your normal activities, watch for opportunities to “grow your love.” Be sensitive to people around you; look for needs in their lives where you can help. These are “God moments” that will benefit both them and you!

One more thing: Remember that this must become a lifestyle, not a one-day exercise. Tomorrow we will talk more about this ever-growing activity that I’m calling, “laid down love.” Jesus did it for you. Return the favor!

Father, thank you for Jesus and His sacrificial love for me. Today, with your help, I will lay my needs aside to help someone else. In Jesus’ Name, amen.

  1. Robert Fox says:

Yes Jesus I join in pastor Bens prayer. Enlarge my heart so I can more of you and less of me. I know you speak to me from my heart through the Holy Spirit. Let me be a blessing to someone today so that you will glorified and honored. I know you put me on earth not to wait for the resurrection but to bring your love to people every day. May that see you in me and then they will want you to be in their life.
Thank you Jesus for a pastor that has a passion for you.
