Keys to Listening
Scripture Reading: Luke 8:14
The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life’s worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature.
The majority of us live very busy lives. Our society and all its options keep us running from one activity to the next. With these many options come worries, obligations and stress. The pursuit of riches and continued pleasures brings an immature lifestyle of immediate gratification.
In the parable we’ve been studying, Jesus was referring to this type of life when He described the third kind of soil. Some seed fell into the lives of people who were so “overtaxed” in their energies that God’s Word got choked out! They had too many other concerns to let God in and do His work in their lives. These people see God’s truth, hear the life-giving principles but, as they are challenged to apply the truth, they won’t slow down long enough to let it happen!
Let me challenge you at this point. Is your soil “overtaxed?” Are you so busy that God and Kingdom interests get set aside—a lot? This world brings a lot of distractions to our lives, much of which is not particularly sinful. We must keep careful watch over the many activities we involve ourselves in so God does not get the leftovers! If we want to hear God speak to us, we must slow down long enough to allow Him to! That means creating a time slot each day when we can quietly pray and read His Word. His still, small voice can still be heard!
Father, with your help, I will clear the clutter out of my life in order to listen better to you! In Jesus’ Name, amen.
