Lures for Fishing
Forgiving Others – Part 1
Scripture Reading: Matthew 18:21-35
Key Verse: Matthew 18:21
Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother when he sins against me? Up to seven times?”
If we are going to be effective in “fishing for people,” we certainly need to use the correct lures. The lure that today’s Key Verse describes is “forgiveness.” To understand what a great lure this is, you need not go any further than yourself. How good does it feel when God forgives you of some sinful behavior you’ve done? How wonderful is it when you hear that God removes that sin from you as far as the east is from the west? Doesn’t it make you love Jesus more as you grasp that all the guilt and shame of your past is forgiven and forgotten?
Jesus understood the power of forgiveness. In Luke 7:47 we read: “I tell you, her sins—and they are many—have been forgiven, so she has shown me much love. But a person who is forgiven little shows only little love.” Again, if you take time to reflect on how much you have been forgiven, surely your love for our Savior grows!
If you have had a person in your life forgive you of some deep offense, I know you have a new appreciation for that person. There was a powerful force in that act of forgiveness that touched your life in a very real way! If you want to know how to influence someone toward Jesus, let them see and experience forgiveness from you. The lure of forgiveness seldom fails!
Father, I know people will hurt me, just as I have hurt you and others. I will give to others what you have given to me: Forgiveness. In Jesus’ name, amen.
