Lures for Fishing
Be Accepting – Part 1
Scripture Reading: Romans 15:5-8
Key Verse: Romans 15:7
Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God.
The next “lure” we must learn to use if we are going to be effective fishers of people, is being accepting. This acceptance is for people, not particularly for what people do. We are not to be accepting of people’s sinful ways. However, rejecting people because they live sinful lives disqualifies us from being fishermen for the kingdom.
Jesus modeled this “accepting lure” throughout His life on earth. The established “church” did not like the fact that Jesus would associate with sinners, but Jesus was teaching His followers by His example to discern the difference of hating sin and hating sinners. Showing compassion for sinners is not compromising our standards of holy living. People may accuse us, as they did Jesus, that we are turning a blind eye to sin when we hang with sinners, but we must please God rather than onlookers.
Jesus told us that it was the job of the Holy Spirit to convict the world of sin (John 16:8). It is our job to be accepting of people. As they feel genuine acceptance, there may come a time when an honest conversation about sinful behavior can take place that is beneficial and led by the Holy Spirit. (Continued)
Father, help me to be an agent of love and mercy today. Help me to live out an accepting attitude toward others. In Jesus’ name, amen.
