Fear of the Future – The Need for Clarity
Please Tell All
Scripture: Matthew 24:3
As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately. “Tell us,” they said, “when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?”
This week we will be looking at the third universal fear found in all societies – the fear of the future. The resulting need is for clarity. In other words, what will my future look like? All of us have some level of fear of the unknown. We like the familiar… it’s more comfortable for us.
In our scripture today, the disciples went to Jesus and were seeking some “clarity” about their future. What would the future look like…how would it affect them? He did not answer all their questions, but Jesus did paint a picture for them to watch for. Matthew 24 and Matthew 25 is Jesus’ clearest teaching on our future and what it will look like. As Christ followers, we need not fear the end of this world, but we should carefully heed all the warnings Jesus taught. Let’s look at a few of these warnings.
First, watch out for those who will come to deceive – saying they are the Christ. The future of this world will be littered with imitators and imitations.
Second, watch for the early warning signs: constant talk of war, famines and earthquakes. These warn of the “beginning of the end.”
Third, watch for persecution of God’s church and His people. From being made fun of… to being put to death, persecution will come upon the church.
Fourth, watch for the mass exit from the faith. Jesus said that many will turn away from the faith.
Jesus concludes this portion with our challenge: those who stand firm to the end will be saved!
Father, help me not to fear but only prepare to stand firm in you. Grant me your strength and blessings as I face my future. In Jesus’ Name, amen.
