A Penny for Your Thoughts
For the lips of an adulteress drip honey,
and her speech is smoother than oil;
She gives no thought to the way of life;
her paths are crooked, but she knows it not.
Adulterous thinking is not thinking at all. I’ve known and talked with a lot of people who ended up in an adulterous relationship and they all say: “What was I thinking?” That was the problem, they weren’t thinking of the real-life issues. Our scripture reminds us that adulterous thinking really gives no thought to the way of life.
The first bonding ritual that couples need to have in place is a time for “thinking about each other.” Every adulterous affair started with someone thinking far too much about a person outside the marriage bond. To prevent this, couples must create a regular time to “think” about themselves; a regular time to talk about their lives – to catch up from a week’s activities. This bonding ritual must have a day and time assigned to it. God understood the need to put exact details on every ritual He asked the Israelites to practice. Otherwise, God knew they would soon fill their lives with other time-consuming activities and squeeze these rituals out of their lives.
I’ve found that men are not good at sitting down, looking their spouse in the eyes and talking. Most couples need to find low key activities that allow for talk time. Walks in the mall and quiet dinners or weekends away (without kids) are examples of bonding rituals. Too many couples give no thought to the way of life! I want to encourage you to put in place this way of life!
Father, thank you for your love and blessings you daily give me. Remind me to bless my spouse with the same. In Jesus’ Name, amen.
