Scripture Reading: Proverbs 5:23
He will die for lack of discipline,
led astray by his own great folly.
I don’t really know why, but I’ve never been able to forget a motto hanging on a wall in one of my childhood Sunday School classrooms. The motto simply said: “The yoke of a free man is discipline.” Forty years later, I still think of it… often. Over the years it has been the disciplines that I have put in place in my life that have helped me discover the freedoms I enjoy. This is especially true in turning my marriage around. If I had listened to my fleshly “want to’s,” my marriage would have died.
Bonding rituals (weekly practices that enrich your marriage) take discipline to keep alive. It does not take discipline to start doing the right things but, rather, to keep them going and growing. We all live busy lives…that busyness usually comes from good activities. Couples that want to grow their marriages must demand weekly time together. It is a discipline worthy of your efforts.
A four- or five-hour evening may not seem like much in comparison to the week’s jam-packed schedule. But, done consistently, it adds up to approximately 260 hours a year. Couples who accomplish that amount of “couple” time, will turn any bad marriage into a good one!
Our scripture for today concludes with the phrase “led astray by his own folly.” Divorce courts are filled with such people. Determine to discipline your life to include God’s eternal values!
Father, grant me your spirit of self-control that I might honor you with every hour of my day! In Jesus’ Name, amen.
