Confidence Before God – Part 2
Scripture: 1 John 3:21-22
Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God and receive from him anything we ask, because we obey his commands and do what pleases him.
Picking up where we left off yesterday, I want to turn to the positive side of our discussion. The apostle John talks about a “heart condition” that is described as “confident before God.” Isn’t that a condition you long for? Surely every Christ follower seeks to enjoy thoughts of confidence as we stand before God. We are “people of light.” We know what is coming after this life is over. Christ followers understand that every “knee shall bow” before the creator of this universe. We believe the Bible when it tells us that it is appointed unto men once to die and then the judgment! Yes, we of all people, seek feelings of confidence before God!
The apostle John is very clear on how we get to this level of confidence: “because we obey His commands and do what pleases Him.” We Christ followers tend to make this more complicated than what it really is. John continues by explaining how to obey and how to please God. I didn’t include verse 23 of 1 John 3, but it tells us to do two things that please God. First, we are to believe on God’s son, Jesus Christ. This is honoring to God, as it would be for someone to tell you that they believe in one of your children – that feels good!
The second thing that John mentions that pleases God is when we love one another. God, our Heavenly Father, smiles when His children are “getting along well.” I believe, on the other hand, that it grieves our Father when we allow division in God’s family.
Father, I want to and am determined to live a life that creates confidence in my heart before you. Holy Spirit, be my helper – I pray in Jesus’ Name, amen.
