Showers of Blessings
The Grinning Reaper: Sowing Seed
Scripture: 2 Corinthians 9:6-8
Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.
Jesus used farm illustrations on many occasions for obvious reasons… most of His listeners farmed. In today’s scripture – the Apostle Paul speaks of the two aspects of successful farming: sowing and reaping. In human terms, one of these is the fun part of farming… reaping! The sowing is the work – the sweat and tears. In order to sow, several unpleasant things must be done: buying seed, plowing the field, planting the seed. There is only one reason any farmer would put himself through the work of sowing, and that is: the joy of reaping. We might say he then is the grinning reaper!
The Apostle Paul quickly makes the spiritual application that sowing brings reaping in God’s economy as well! In God’s Kingdom we must learn what “sowing seed” is all about if we want to reap God’s rich blessings. The Bible tells us that every kind deed, every small gift and giving of money to help God’s Kingdom on earth equals sowing seed. God is the “accountant” and He never misses a “seed sown,” down to even a “cup of cold water” given in Jesus’ name. Every dollar given and every kind deed done is like putting a “seed in the ground” on your land! You and I are going to reap the benefits in our lives. The Bible may seem a little unclear on some of today’s issues. But it is very clear on this point: God loves it when we give unselfishly to His Kingdom purposes. God would never forget to reward us with a blessing. Let’s go sow seed… in Jesus’ name!
Father, open my eyes to the needs of your Kingdom on earth. Show me the place to sow some seeds today. Thanks for noticing! In Jesus Name, amen!
