Plug In…Plant Deep
Doing Good – Part 2
Scripture Reading: 1 Timothy 6:11-21
Key Verse: 1 Timothy 6:18
Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share.
If you are like me, there are times, especially when there are financial pressures present, that I struggle with envy of those who have lots of money. Yes, I know better. Yes, I’m convinced that all the money in the world wouldn’t solve all my problems. But, humanly, it is a tantalizing lie–this money thing!
The Apostle Paul speaks to young Timothy about this money issue. He tells the rich not to be egotistical about their money. People with money might be tempted to think they are more important than those without money. Timothy was instructed to warn them not to put their hope in money. It can be gone tomorrow if certain economic circumstances come about. Paul told Timothy to point people to God. He, alone, is worthy of our hope!
How do we “put” our hope in something? Our scripture today says that this happens in whatever we involve ourselves in. If I’m heavily involved in the stock market trends, my hope is being placed there. But God’s Word is telling us to be heavily involved in good deeds. Paul said it this way: “Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds” (1 Timothy 6:18). This “doing good,” helping others, is the key to building our hope in God. When we plug in to a regular routine of helping others, we are “planting deep” and storing up treasures for eternity!
Father grant me your wisdom so I can do life right. I know your way is the only way to right living – I will give myself to this way today! In Jesus’ Name, amen.
