Scripture Reading: Malachi 2:16
“I hate divorce,” says the Lord God of Israel, “and I hate a man’s covering himself with violence as well as with his garment,” says the Lord Almighty.
So guard yourself in your spirit, and do not break faith.
Our scripture mentions two things God hates, neither of which include us – as his created beings. God never hates people – only the “things” that we sometimes involve ourselves in!
The first thing mentioned here that God hates is divorce. Again, God doesn’t hate the people getting the divorce. God is often grieved and saddened by our decisions, but He never hates us. The reason God hates divorce is twofold. First, He hates it because He knows how damaging it is to all involved. God loves us so much that He wants us to stay away from the things that will harm us. Divorce hurts people on many levels.
The second thing mentioned in our scripture that God hates is violence. Violence, in this context, once again relates to God’s value on relationships! We, as parents, hate it when our children hurt each other in any way. How much more does God hate it when His children hurt each other with words and actions!
Bonding rituals will help couples avoid these two pitfalls of divorce and violence. Creating consistent activities that cause two people – in a marriage relationship – to spend time and energy on each other is priceless! Husbands, do you want to please God? Be creative and surprise your wife with some activity that shows how you value the relationships. Wives, God is so pleased with you every time you put special effort into your husband (even if your husband doesn’t always seem to appreciate it).
Father, I want to love what you love and hate what you hate. Grant me doses of your wisdom to live these values every day! In Jesus’ Name, amen.
