When We Obey
Scripture Reading: 2 Peter 1:3-11
Key Verse: 2 Peter 1:8
For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
As we wrap up this week on delighting God with our obedience, it would be great if you could take a couple of minutes to read the suggested “Additional Reading” section. Our scripture today, 2 Peter 1:8, tells us to possess the qualities listed in the other verses of chapter one. The promise to us is that we will be effective and productive in our walk with God if we incorporate these qualities in our life. Let’s look at four of them.
First, the apostle Peter tells us to add goodness to our faith. So simple, yet central to the character of God: Be a good person! We know when we are not being good people because the Holy Spirit is faithful to point it out!
Second on this list of qualities is knowledge. We must move from zeal for God to depth in our knowledge of God! Knowledge comes from the routines of Bible reading, Christian books, corporate worship times and small group involvement in order to discuss God’s Word!
Third on Peter’s list is self-control! Our original faith that saved us from our sins needs our efforts to stop future sinning against the grace of God! We must continually work on our self-control!
Fourth is perseverance, plain old determination! Jesus told us we would have trouble in this life, so buckle in, He was right! Christian living is no cake walk; it takes perseverance. Be sure to read the other qualities listed in our scripture. For today, let’s add these qualities to our faith journey!
Father, I will put intentional effort in adding to my faith in you today! Grant me wisdom and reminders throughout my day. I ask this in Jesus’ Name, Amen.
