A Bad Marriage, Gone Good

If we choose to let our partner off the hook as far as any negative reactions from us, we grow strong

Appreciate Differences
The Great Cover Up!

Scripture Reading: Proverbs 17:9

He who covers over an offense promotes love,
but whoever repeats the matter separates close friends.

My title for today’s devotional normally would refer to a scandal of some sort. We’ve seen our share of cover ups in the news lately, but I’m using it in the most positive sense possible, as does our scripture. We often see our spouse’s differences as offensive to us. That is not particularly a good perspective, but probably one that we can’t eliminate. The next best thing is to practice this “great cover up,” suggested in God’s Word for today. This great cover up promotes love, not deceit.

When we practice the great cover up, we are not denying or ignoring the offensive behavior. It simply means we choose to forgive – as Christ forgave us. We choose to let our partner off the hook as far as any negative reactions from us. No yelling, no pouting – just a pleasant attitude, like nothing ever happened. That is the great cover up that promotes love.

There are times when we will need to talk to our spouse about the “offense” in order to improve our relationship. But if we’ve first practiced this great cover up… then later – with no need for negative or explosive emotions – we can talk about growth in that area.

I want to end today by saying not all offenses should be handled with the great cover up. There are times when the offense is so damaging that it must be dealt with directly and immediately. But, be discerning enough not to lump all your spouse’s “imperfections” into this category! It’s my opinion that the “great” cover up will be appropriate for most of your differences!

Father, I am mindful every day of your grace and forgiveness for my wayward ways. Remind me to ‘pay this forward’ to my spouse! In Jesus’ Name, amen.
