The Bible gives believers a “bill of rights” of sorts, granted by our gracious Heavenly Father

Simple Prayers
Daily Bread

Scripture Reading: Matthew 7:25-27

Key Verse: Matthew 6:11

Give us today our daily bread.

We use the phrase, “our God-given rights,” when we are speaking of expected freedoms or favors simply because we live and breathe. Christ followers can use that phrase as well when thinking of what they can expect from God. The Bible gives believers a “bill of rights” of sorts, granted by our gracious Heavenly Father. Like all our blessings, these “rights” should always be received with grateful thanksgiving!

In the model prayer that Jesus outlines, He told us that we should include in our prayers: “Give us our daily bread.” In other words, Jesus wants us to know that the needs and desires of our hearts should be presented to our Father. This part of the prayer includes all the “favors” we would ask of God. The Hebrew writer confirms our right to ask for these favors: “Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need” (Hebrews 4:16).

Please note the order of this model prayer thus far. First, we praised God for being our Father and meditated on all the privileges that come with that relationship. Second, we honored His hallowed name by our acknowledgement and worship. Third, we were taught to mention His coming kingdom and pray for its coming. Fourth, Jesus taught us to release our will to His perfect will! The fifth step, seeking favors, now fits into this divine order of prayer. Ask with confidence!

Father, thanks for knowing my needs and wants before I even ask. I trust your decisions on all my requests! In Jesus’ Name, amen.
