Cleaning the Fish – Tools Needed
Living and Active
Scripture Reading: Hebrews 4:6-13
Key Verse: Hebrews 4:12
For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.
The Bible is different than any other book that we read. Other books can instruct and entertain, but the Bible goes beyond all that. When someone reads God’s Word with a heart that is seeking Him, the Bible comes alive. The Hebrew writer describes the scriptures as “living and active.”
As we read scripture, God’s Holy Spirit can guide our minds to focus on the verses that speak to our daily life. Some have described these moments as scripture “leaping off the pages.” In other words, we suddenly are impacted in a very special way by the verses we are reading. The problem we are dealing with or the struggle that seems to wear us out comes face to face with God’s Word. At these moments, a peace comes in spite of the problems or struggles. Suddenly we know that God has given us His presence and promise to help.
This process is so important to making disciples of new believers. We must never stop with the “catching” of fish; we must clean them with this method. Every believer must learn to read God’s Word with the expectation of hearing from God. When we realize that it is in our reading of the Bible that we find help for our struggles, we will look forward to our time with the Word.
Father, thank you for providing your written Word. I will look forward to you speaking into my life as I read. In Jesus’ name, amen.
