Go Fish

Mentoring in the church is the most effective way to get new believers established in the faith!

Cleaning Fish – Best Practices
Be a Mentor – Part 2

Scripture Reading: 2 Timothy 2:1-7

Key verse: 2 Timothy 2:2

And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others.

We are all aware that our world would be in much better shape if it was full of good models and mature mentors; absent fathers and immoral teen role models have opened the door to many of our problems in society.

In a scriptural passage in Titus we read that older men and women should train the young people to live self-controlled and pure lives (Titus 2:4). This is the biblical method for discipling the younger, more inexperienced, believers. It is obvious, in our secular school systems, that the teacher-student ratio is a critical factor in education. Mentoring in the church—one on one—is the most effective way to get new believers established in the faith! It is never enough to “catch fish.” We must learn the best practices of “cleaning fish.” In the modern church world, there is no better way to move a new believer to a mature believer than mentoring. Instruction and encouragement can be specific and balanced when dealing with someone one on one!

To set up a formal mentoring situation is always a little tricky; it’s like trying to match make friends. Let me encourage you to either seek a mentor or become one, according to your journey with God. Ask God to help you find someone “naturally” that will feel good to both people involved.

Father, I am willing to be involved in a mentoring relationship. Please guide that process! In Jesus’ name, amen.
