Striving for Purity – Part 7
Scripture Reading: 2 Peter 3:14-18
Key Verse: 2 Peter 3:14
And so, dear friends, while you are waiting for these things to happen, make every effort to be found living peaceful lives that are pure and blameless in his sight.
Another key phrase in the today’s scripture reading is, “be on guard,” found in 2 Peter 3:17. Yesterday’s devotional talked about making every effort to achieve purity. However, many times we are causing ourselves more effort than should be necessary because we are not guarding our hearts. Sometimes we cause our own battles by thinking we can handle more than we truly can handle. Being on guard is a great tool to prevent some battles from ever coming our way.
Are you guarding what your eyes see on TV or in the movies? There are some immoralities that will come into our sight, no matter what we do; we must deal with it. But there are some immoral things that come into our minds because we made choices that allowed it to happen. You oversee what you see on TV. You oversee what movies you pay for and go see. When you log into your computer, you have a choice on the sites that you land on. I realize that a person can unintentionally open a site that has things that they didn’t intend to see, but those are the exceptions. Be honest, we bring our own troubles on far too many times.
Be on guard! Take initiative and stop allowing things that you know give you trouble in the area of impurity to come into your mind. I use the “bounce” method, which is bouncing off anything that pops up in my vision that I know will cause me to struggle. I quickly close my eyes or walk the other direction as soon as I can recognize the problem. A long time ago I stopped telling myself that I’m strong enough to watch immoral things and not let it bother my walk with God. When are you going to get honest?
Father, help me to guard my heart. In Jesus’ Name, amen.
