How to Hear From God

The work of the Holy Spirit is to slowly deliver truth to us as we can receive it!

Ways to Listen to God
Who is Speaking for Whom?

Scripture Reading: John 16:13-14

But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you.

When Jesus tells us that the Holy Spirit will guide us into all truth, that is a huge statement. How much information in the world contains truth, as well as lies? This statement takes a lifetime to accomplish. All along life’s journey, the Holy Spirit reveals truths to us, little by little. In John 16:12, Jesus told His disciples that there was much more He wanted to say to them. More than they could bear. Jesus knew that our finite minds needed truth distributed a day at a time. Too much input at one time overwhelms us. The work of the Holy Spirit is to slowly deliver truth to us as we can receive it! Trust Him, He will guide us into all the truth we need for today!

Another important fact about our personal Counselor, the Holy Spirit, is that He speaks only what the Father tells Him to! He speaks nothing on His own as John writes in our scripture for today! God speaks and the Spirit hears and delivers the message to God’s children. If you have ever been afraid that you wouldn’t be able to hear from God, worry no more! God wants to communicate with you so much that He created a whole system to make it happen! Let’s review: First, Jesus came, and God’s Word became flesh. Second, God gifted people with special abilities to communicate God’s voice to us. Third, God sent a Counselor, the Holy Spirit, to live in every believer, making sure we could hear from God! Relax, God knows how to speak in order to be heard!

Father, thanks for creating this two-way relationship. I love walking with you. In Jesus’ Name, amen.
