Fear of the Future – The Need for Clarity
You Know Very Well
Scripture: 1 Thessalonians 5:1-2
Now, brothers, about times and dates we do not need to write to you, for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night.
The Apostle Paul believed that these Thessalonian Christ followers had all the clarity needed concerning the timing of Jesus’ return. “For you know very well” is a phrase that tells us that Paul had taught this to them many times. Paul was writing about the “day of the Lord” – which we understand as the rapture – Jesus’ return for faithful followers!
This “day of the Lord” will be a great surprise for the non-believers. It won’t be like they’ve never been told – rather it will refute their disbelief. Those that will be left behind after the rapture will all come to the realization: Christ followers were right. Paul describes this event for the non-believers as like a thief breaking into their homes. They didn’t believe it would happen, they did not prepare for it to happen, and they lost the most precious of all gifts – eternal life with God through belief in His son, Jesus Christ. A few people who are left behind may endure those seven years of tribulation and still be saved, but it will come at a great cost!
The Apostle Paul goes on to say that for us believers, this will not catch us by surprise. We should all be watching carefully, heeding all the warnings given in Matthew 24! Paul encourages us to be “alert and self-controlled.” I like how Paul concludes this discussion: “Therefore, encourage one another and build each other up…” (1 Thessalonians 5:11). Are you doing that?
Father, I am so glad to be a person of ‘light’ – seeing the truth and following you. May my light help those still in darkness. In Jesus’ Name, amen.
