The First Resurrection
Scripture: Revelation 20:6
Blessed and holy are those who have part in the first resurrection. The second death has no power over them, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with him for a thousand years.
The author of the book of Revelation, the Apostle John, received many visions of the future events for our world and its inhabitants. Some of them are hard for many of us to understand. In today’s scripture, John’s vision is clear.
The first resurrection that John speaks of is what we often refer to as the “rapture.” Jesus is coming back to this earth and collecting all true believers and lifting them out of this world. John reminds us that those who participate in this first resurrection will be holy. The Apostle Paul wrote that “without holiness no one would see the Lord” (Hebrews 12:14).This is a warning and a challenge for all believers. We must walk worthy of our calling… saying no to temptations and yes to God’s impressions on our minds!
All those who participate in the first resurrection need not fear the “second death,” according to our scripture for today. The first “death” is a physical dying – our fleshly bodies go back to dust. The second death is a spiritual death where our eternal destiny is sealed and separated from God. Those without Jesus have so much to fear…this should sadden us and motivate us to share our hope in Jesus!
The “thousand years” mentioned is the first stage of the final days of this world. Believers need not fear – we’ll be with God and never experience the other events of those last days!
Father, your Word has reminded me again of how grateful I am to be in your family. I rest in you and rejoice! In Jesus’ Name, amen.
