Rejoicing in Suffering – Part 2
Scripture Reading: Romans 5:1-5
Key Verse: Romans 5:3
Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance
Yesterday’s devotional reminded us of two facts that build a foundation for our life in Christ. First, we have peace with God. Second, all troubles are saturated with God’s good purposes, even though those troubles did not come from Him.
Today we want to examine what some of those “good purposes” are for us. The Apostle Paul tells us that for God’s children suffering produces perseverance. The Greek word that Paul uses is “hupomone” and literally means steadfastness, constancy or endurance. If you are a sincere Christ follower, God’s Holy Spirit has placed new values in your heart and perseverance is one of them. We all want to be steadfast and have strong endurance. That being the case, God’s good purpose in suffering is to produce that in your life! It is starting to become clear how Paul could write, “We rejoice in suffering.”
The second “good purpose” the apostle listed is character. This word reflects a person who has been tried and proven. No one can use the description, “good character” on someone that has not proven it in the trenches of real life! Going through tough times and keeping the faith proves that a Christ follower is of good character! (Continued)
Father, I do want to be steadfast and of good character! I will trust you to do your good work in me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
