God Asks: Deal or No Deal?

When it comes down to it, our decision for or against God will be made clear, as God’s Spirit works in us

Life’s Choices
God’s Will

Scripture Reading: John 7:14-19

Key Verse: John 7:17

”If anyone chooses to do God’s will, he will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own.”

In our scripture for today Jesus is challenging the Jewish people who had attended a holiday feast called “Feast of the Tabernacles.” This holiday was to remind them of how God had brought Israel out of Egypt and guided them through the wilderness. During the feast, Jesus went to the temple courts to teach God’s will. He concluded with a challenge: anyone who will choose to do God’s will, will find out whether Jesus’ teaching was from God or not. Undoubtedly, the Apostle James was building on these words of Jesus when he wrote: “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says” (James 1:22).

We do not truly choose God by simply giving mental approval of His words. To choose is to do, to choose is to act out. Lifestyle changes occur! Jesus gives us the same challenge: if you choose to actually do God’s will, it will be confirmed in your heart that this is from God. When it comes down to it, this decision for or against God is as clear as the TV show’s premise was: deal or no deal. Either you do God’s will, as you know it, or you don’t! If you are doing all you know to do, God continues to work His will in you.

Let’s conclude today with Hebrews 13:20-21. As you cooperate, this is what God will do: May the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep,  equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Father, I choose you and your ways. I will do, today, what I know to do in order to accomplish your purposes in my life. Open my eyes to your will for me! In Jesus’ Name, amen.
