A Bad Marriage, Gone Good

The worldly approach to most of life’s conflicts is to fight for “rights” – God has a better way!

Practice Kindness
Conform No More!

Scripture Reading: Romans 12:2

Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is–his good, pleasing and perfect will.

If I am going to practice kindness to my wife with any consistency, I must have my “thinking” aligned with God’s thinking – not with the world’s. We all get large doses of worldly thinking every day. TV, co-workers, neighbors and sports activities…all fill our heads with ideas for operating our lives. Most of these ideas don’t match God’s ideas. That is why we Christ followers must have our minds “renewed” by God’s grace and truth.

The worldly approach to most of life’s conflicts is to fight for “rights.” This sense of entitlement doesn’t fit God’s model for successful living. When I operate my life with this demand for fairness because I’m entitled to it, I am conforming to worldly ideas. Jesus modeled a different approach. Servant hood, self-sacrifice and humility were characteristics of His lifestyle. Jesus was kind to everyone, not because everyone deserved it, but because Jesus choose to be kind. Jesus didn’t constantly ask: Is this fair, aren’t I entitled to better treatment? No, He left that in God’s hands. Jesus simply showed kindness to everyone!

Will you be able to be kind to your spouse today? If they must earn it in some manner, then your kindness is conditional and very inconsistent. A bad marriage can only “go” good when at least one spouse decides to follow the Jesus model… at home! If both make the choice, the road to success is shortened by miles! What is your decision?

Father, remind me today to give kindness to everyone, especially my spouse. Make kindness my ‘knee jerk’ reaction to any unfair treatment that may come my way! In Jesus’ Name, amen.
