I Know I Can’t Earn the Savior!
A Different Gospel?
Scripture Reading: Galatians 1:6-9
Key Verse: Galatians 1:6
I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you by the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel
Other religions make more sense than the gospel of Jesus Christ! Humanly it is sound thinking that you earn what you experience. It is more logical that a God in heaven needs to be appeased, thinking we must crawl into His presence and bring him some gifts of value. We humans understand a “Code of Conduct.” Line up and you will be accepted. Get out of line and you will be rejected!
The Apostle Paul, in our scripture for today, is fighting this battle of the human tendency. He had preached the Gospel of Jesus Christ which is all about “grace” not “merit.” The Gospel is all about belief not head knowledge. The Gospel that Paul preached was all about receiving, by faith, Jesus and His sacrifice, not trusting our own sacrifices! The stumbling point for the Jews was the idea that the Jewish (Mosaic) laws could not save them. The concept of “faith alone” was a tall mountain for them to climb. In the town of Galatia, many of the Jews had, indeed, received the Gospel of Christ alone. But—to Paul’s astonishment—some of them were being persuaded to turn back to the “logical” religion of: You’ve got to earn it! The apostle pleads with them to stick with “grace” not “law.”
Do we have tendencies to run back to a gospel of earning our salvation? I think we all do. We must fight for the “pure” Gospel of grace: Faith in Christ alone!
Father, I know I can’t earn you and your forgiveness, but I try to at times. Please keep reminding me that it’s my faith, not my works that matter! In Jesus’ Name, amen.
