The Coming Kingdom
Scripture Reading: Matthew 13:24-30
Key Verse: Matthew 6:10
your kingdom come, your will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
Jesus told many parables that started with the phrase: “The kingdom of heaven is like…” Jesus wanted to constantly remind His followers that there is another kingdom coming when our lives here are completed. It shouldn’t surprise us that when He taught on prayer, He wanted God’s kingdom to be highlighted.
The model prayer was given to His followers and for His followers. God didn’t need to be reminded that His kingdom was real and coming! Jesus didn’t want us to lose sight of it. He knew how easy it would be for His followers to get consumed with their present kingdom. We humans like what we can experience with our present senses. This earthly kingdom is comfortable for us, even if it doesn’t serve us well.
The truth is, the moment we lose sight of God’s eternal kingdom, this present, earthly kingdom gains far too much importance in our minds. Christ followers that will “fight the good fight” and be “over comers” are the ones that constantly remind themselves that another, far greater, kingdom is coming!
Repetition is the key to our memory. Keeping a clear focus on God’s kingdom will take repetition of thought. Jesus told his followers: “This, then, is how you should pray…Your kingdom come.” If our daily prayers repeat this concept, whatever words we use, we’ll be encouraged to stay strong and, as the Apostle Paul wrote, “not grow weary”!
Father, my mind can only imagine the things you are preparing for your children. My eternal home with you is the hope that keeps me going. In Jesus’ Name, amen.
