I Know I Couldn’t Ignore the Savior
Prophets Pointed to Him
Scripture Reading: Isaiah 9:2 & 7
Key Verse: Isaiah 9:6
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Maybe you have seen the method of advertising where for a mile or two you see road signs giving bits and pieces of why you must stop and shop. Most of the time these signs are small, often handmade, reminding the passersby they are almost there: The greatest store! A “must see,” only a few hundred yards ahead!
Hundreds of years before Jesus came to earth, God gave some “road signs” to His prophets. He inspired them to write out these “signs,” reminding people that Jesus would soon arrive. Our key verse for today is only one of many that have been scattered through Old Testament writings. “A child would be born, to us a son given.” Sound familiar? It is easier for us to understand because we’ve already passed the “store,” the birth of Christ has been celebrated for years. But to these, before the event, they only had the “road sign.” They were anticipating the blessed event, the promised coming of their Messiah!
It’s good for us to look back at these old “road signs” that the prophets wrote. It’s a good reminder that God always has and always will point people to Jesus His Son. God won’t let the world go long before He reminds us again: We have been given a Savior! The evil influences always try to get people to ignore Him, but God just won’t let that happen!
Father, forgive me when I ignore the work or nudges of the Holy Spirit in me. I want to live today, aware of your everlasting presence. In Jesus’ Name, amen.
