Showers of Blessings
Obedience to the Shepherd
Scripture: Deuteronomy 28:1-2
If you fully obey the Lord your God and carefully follow all his commands I give you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations on earth. All these blessings will come upon you and accompany you if you obey the Lord your God:
Enjoying the blessings of God depend on our obedience to God. Therefore, it is critical for us to understand the level of obedience God expects. The Bible refers to our obedience throughout its pages, from Genesis to Revelation.
The foundation of Biblical obedience is walking like Jesus (1 John 2:6). This level of obedience was summarized a few years ago in a popular wrist band with the letters printed on it: WWJD (What Would Jesus Do?). This simple approach to daily life can help us live in obedience and, thus, receive all the blessings of God that He intended us to enjoy!
A second aspect of Biblical obedience is explained in 1 John 3:9: “No one who is born of God, practices sin… ” The key word in this verse is PRACTICE. The language of these passages on sin teaches us that true Christ followers do not engage in continual, on-going sin. There are times when we revert back to our old ways, but that is an exception – not the rule.
One aspect of Biblical obedience must be addressed. This deals with our “intentions.” The Bible makes a distinction between an act that was done with “little or no thought” and an act done with clear intentions. Everybody falls short of perfection in our daily routines, making “thoughtless” mistakes out of fatigue or frustration. These “human short comings” are totally different from having pre-conceived ideas, with time to think about our actions – then doing the sinful deed. This latter type of disobedience is the kind that will close the floodgates of God’s blessings in our lives. If you are involved in an ongoing lifestyle that you know Jesus would never participate in… you must face it, deal with it, repent of it and stop it! God is anxious to bless everyone who turns from their old ways of living to His new way of life in Jesus Christ!
Father, I want the floodgates of Heaven to pour out blessings to me each and everyday. Please show me anything that would hinder these blessings. Help me to be open and honest before you. In Jesus Name, amen.
