The Devil and Diversion
Footholds – Part 2
Scripture Reading: Ephesians 4:25-32
Key Verse: Ephesians 4:27
and do not give the devil a foothold.
The Apostle Paul adds, to his writings in Ephesians, more footholds that we must guard against. In Ephesians 4:19 he writes about unwholesome talk. Our society is full of talk about things that used to be looked upon as shameful or, at the least, matters for private conversations. Now, talk shows and sitcoms deal with unwholesome material openly, without hesitation.
Do you allow yourself to get involved with conversations that you would avoid if you could see Jesus standing right beside you? Maybe the content of the conversation or the language you use may not be blatantly sinful, but certainly far from wholesome. Remember what a foothold is? It is “a position from which progress may be made.” In the case of unwholesome talk, we can see that, if allowed, it can easily progress into sinful language that would grieve the heart of God! Verse 30 gives warning to Christ followers to guard against grieving the Holy Spirit!
Finally, Paul lists attitudinal behaviors that would all give the devil a foothold in our lives: “Bitterness, rage, anger, brawling, slander and all kinds of malice” (Ephesians 4:31). These attitudes and behaviors become diversions to our goal of becoming more like Christ. The devil loves them because they slow our progress and hurt others around us in their journey as well! If you recognize any of these footholds in your life, get honest and open before the Lord; confess and turn from them!
Father, open my eyes to anything I’m allowing in my life that gives the devil a secure position to operate. Grant me the courage to come clean! In Jesus’ Name, amen.
