How to be Led by God

One of the most common ways of searing our conscience is by ignoring it

Scripture: 1 Timothy 4:2

Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron.

As we wrap up this seven-day emphasis on following our conscience, there is one last caution needed. The apostle Paul, mentoring young Timothy, warns of the possibility of searing one’s conscience. Webster uses words like “scorch” and “deaden” to explain the meaning of “searing.” As it relates to our conscience, how does one sear the conscience… or deaden it?

One of the most common ways of searing our conscience is by ignoring it. Of all of God’s creations, human beings are the only ones who have received the faculty of a conscience. It is like a muscle. When exercised properly, it keeps working normally. But, like a muscle, if it is ignored long enough, it will atrophy. When we allow our conscience to waste away, we no longer can distinguish right from wrong. It might be more accurate to say that we no longer care about the difference between right and wrong.

Another searing method, according to the apostle, is to abandon our faith. Our scripture is describing people that Paul had witnessed who no longer were clinging to the basic beliefs they were taught. These, according to Paul, followed deceiving spirits. The context leads me to believe that this condition was the result of conscious decisions on their part. As they disregarded truth that once guided their lives, they soon lost all sense of direction and seared their conscience in the process.

Join me in renewing our determination to listen to our conscience and cling to our faith!

Father, you provided mechanisms to guide and lead me. With your help, I will allow them to fully work in me. In Jesus’ Name, amen.
