How to be Led by God

It is the devil’s job to point out the ‘benefits’ of sin, it’s our job to remind ourselves that he is a liar!

Follow Your Conscience
Avenging Self

Scripture: 1 Samuel 25:30-31

When the Lord has done for my master every good thing he promised concerning him and has appointed him leader over Israel, my master will not have on his conscience the staggering burden of needless bloodshed or of having avenged himself. And when the Lord has brought my master success, remember your servant.”

David almost blew it… he almost did something that would haunt him for years. David had shown kindness to a man, but in return the man returned evil. David’s “knee-jerk” reaction was to take 400 of his men, with their swords, and take revenge on this man – and all his household. God used the evil man’s wife to remind David to let God handle revenge… she pleaded with David not to avenge himself. The New International Version translates 1 Samuel 25:31 with these words: “The staggering burden.” All of us know the feeling – when we’ve done something we regret… our conscience is stabbed… it is a burden; a heavy load on our hearts.

Jesus said he came to give us life and life more abundant. That is impossible if our conscience has a staggering burden weighing on it! If we truly want to learn how to be led by God, we must learn to listen to our conscience. The conscience is a “tool” which God put within us that He uses to guide our steps. If we ignore it, we will do things that hurt us more than anybody else. If David would have completed this ill-advised plan, the man would have died, but David would have lived with a conscience that had a staggering burden weighing on him! It would have been David that truly lost that war!

As we are faced with temptations, we must force our thoughts to consider the heavy burden we will feel after the fact! It is the devil’s job to point out the benefits of caving in… it’s our job to paint the staggering burden on our conscience we’ll feel afterward.

Father, remind me to consider all the facts when faced with temptation today. I want your guidance…use my conscience and I will listen. In Jesus’ Name, amen.
