More Than a Job
A Good Work
Scripture Reading: Philippians 1:1-11
Key Verse: Philippians 1:6
being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
If you take time to read the first eleven verses of Philippians chapter one, you will see Paul using the word “partnership.” Partnership is very meaningful when it comes to ministry. This week we have talked about the life ministry that God appoints each of us to. It is individual and personal – “to each one God’s grace is given” (1 Corinthians 12:6). The fact that our “giftedness” is personal does not mean we operate in isolation. The Body of Christ, God’s church, operates as a partnership. The apostle Paul declares this in his letter to the Corinthians: “Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good” (1 Corinthians 12:7; emphasis mine.)
God appoints each of His followers a place to serve; a ministry to enjoy – not a job to complete! Our personal ministry, in partnership with others in the church, carries the work of God to completion until the Day of Christ Jesus. Throughout these first eleven verses in today’s additional reading section, we see how important the apostle feels about each of us “growing our ministry” more and more. God grants us our gifts, His enablement, for the ministry assigned to us, but we must give ourselves to improving and growing it. The key verse is today’s scripture: “He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion.” In other words, as we do our best, take serious God’s appointment in our lives – He will make us and our ministry what He wants it to be! We will be able to discern what is best!
Father, I accept the assignment you have for me. I will pray and seek deeper understanding and effectiveness of my ministry. Come Holy Spirit, I need you! In Jesus’ Name, amen.
