Teach Us to Pray

If you struggle to believe in God’s love and acceptance for you, read Luke 15

Prayer and Our Relationship with God
Undeserving

Scripture Reading: Luke 15:11-16

Key Verse: Luke 15:13

“Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living.”

When we start our prayers with “Our Father,” Jesus knew we would be focused on a relationship. Jesus spent His short earthly ministry helping us understand the covenant relationship God wanted with us. One of the first principles of this relationship is God’s love for us that we can’t earn, and don’t deserve.

In our Key Verse for today, Jesus is telling a parable that helps us understand the heart of our Father in heaven. One son, in the story, asked for his inheritance and ran away from the father, to a distant land. There he squandered his wealth in wild living. When this prodigal son finally decided to come home, he planned to be a simple servant of his father. Humanly, this makes perfect sense. He made bad choices, lived the high life (worldly-wise) and now he would take his lumps and “pay the piper.”

When we go to prayer, we often feel like this prodigal son. We feel unworthy to come into God’s presence, much less ask for favors. In fact, this feeling keeps many people from praying at all. We, like this prodigal son, get so focused on the bad we have done, we don’t see the love our Father has for us. This amazing unconditional love is hard for us to accept. It goes beyond human comprehension.

This morning, if you are struggling to believe in God’s love and acceptance for you, read Luke 15 again. It is there to help us focus on God’s open heart and arms. Receive it by faith, despite your feelings.

Father, I’m drenched with feelings of unworthiness this morning. I’ll come running to you, trusting your unfailing love for me. In Jesus’ Name, amen.
