Growing Our Harmony – Part 1
Keys to the Kingdom
Scripture: Matthew 16:18-19
And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”
The first beatitude tells us that anyone who understands their great need of Jesus and God’s grace will be given the Kingdom of Heaven. This Kingdom has keys to get in per today’s scripture. These keys open doors…as well as close them. The keys grant access to God’s blessings, guidance and help. When we carry the keys, we walk freely into all aspects of God’s Kingdom.
Knowing about these keys should lead us to ask how to obtain them! To get our answer, we go to the first person who received them, the Apostle Peter. The passage of scripture we are reading today tells us that Peter received the keys because of his confession of faith that Jesus was the Christ, the Son of the living God. You see – that was big. It was the answer Jesus was hoping for…from Peter…from you and me.
Why is this faith confession so important that it results in being given keys to God’s Kingdom? Because once we get this basic truth, nothing else can stop us…nothing can separate us from His love (Romans 8:37-39). This confession moves Jesus from the ranks of a great prophet to the divine Son of God. This confession makes all the predictions and promises of God true and available. Armed with this belief we move within God’s Kingdom freely…we have the keys. What a benefit!
Father, I confess you to be the only true God and Jesus to be your Son. Every promise of the Bible is mine to claim and enjoy. Thanks! In Jesus’ name, amen.
