Plug In…Plant Deep
Handle with Care
Scripture Reading: 2 Timothy 2:14-21
Key Verse: 2 Timothy 2:15
Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.
The process of plugging in starts with each of us presenting ourselves to God. We work for him; we plug in because of Him; He alone is worthy of our worship and service. Our Key Verse for today instructs us to present ourselves “to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed…” American workers that have lost pride in their work end up being ashamed of their work (or at least should be). Those who go to work each day with new energy to do their jobs well, take pride in what they accomplish.
The Apostle Paul is describing this same attitude for Christ followers. We are to take pride in our service to God, to determine to find our place and then give ourselves to that place. We are to apply ourselves in a way that we “need not be ashamed.” The results of our work are often in God’s hands, but if we have diligently given ourselves to the effort, that is what God requires of each of us!
In our scripture reading section, Paul uses the illustration of the many articles found in a large house. Some articles are made of gold and some are made of wood. In the long run, it’s the gold articles that will endure. So it is for each person who gives themselves to God’s service: we will be instruments for “noble purposes, made holy; useful to the Master and prepared to do any good work” (2 Timothy 2:21).
Father, I don’t want my life to be spent on lesser things that pass with this world. Guide me to the “gold,” your noble purpose for me. In Jesus’ Name, amen.
