How to be Used by God

Confession of our faults and/or sins to another person is an essential ingredient in being transparent

Be Transparent
Confession is Good

Scripture Reading: James 5:13-20

Key Verse: James 5:16

Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.

Yesterday we talked about Moses and his willingness to be honest about his own weaknesses. This openness didn’t hinder Moses’ ability to be used of God. In fact, we see that it was the very reason God could use him. Had Moses been a proud man, his usefulness would have been severely limited, as we will see in tomorrow’s devotional.

James is teaching New Testament Christ followers this same lesson. In today’s scripture, we are told to be open and honest about our sins. The Living Bible says: “Admit your faults to one another and pray for each other so that you may be healed.” Confession of our faults and/or sins to another person is an essential ingredient in being transparent. Your faults are no worse than mine. Mine are no worse than yours, in God’s sight. When we hide our shortcomings from each other, we appear to not have any problems. Others around us feel insecure, wondering why they can’t be perfect. Discouragement results from people not being transparent with others! God can’t and won’t bless those too proud to be honest and real about themselves.

The Bible is not calling us to indiscriminately show everyone our “dirty laundry.” James is calling us to be accountable to our brothers and sisters in the Lord that we are in relationship with. It is in these circles of Christian fellowship that we can confess our faults and be healed!

Father, I praise you for forgiving my shameful past and giving me new life in Jesus Christ. As I walk through this life, use me as an instrument in your hand. I ask this in Jesus’ Name, amen.
