How to Hear From God

God, in His infinite wisdom, gave us another source for our encouragement and guidance: His Spirit

Ways to Listen to God
The Counselor

Scripture Reading: John 16:7

But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.

Jesus knew that we would all need some counseling along the way as we walk with God. Yes, the Bible sheds light on our paths; preachers, evangelists and shepherds guide us in our understanding. God, in His infinite wisdom, gave us another source for our encouragement and guidance: His Spirit. Our scripture today refers to the Spirit as our Counselor. Consider what the role of a counselor means for us.

First, a counselor exists for others, not himself. The very term counselor indicates that this role is about others. The Holy Spirit is given to us, for us! He exists to encourage and guide us along our journey with God. This Counselor operates within our minds, suggesting, nudging, and convincing us of God’s wisdom.

Second, John’s description lets us know that this Counselor was sent to us by God. First God sent Jesus, in the flesh, to walk among us, showing us by example how God “thinks” and what God wants in us. Then, according to today’s scripture, Jesus went back to Heaven in order that the Counselor could come to us. One might say the Holy Spirit is Jesus, without a physical body, moving in all believers. Jesus could not physically be everywhere while He was contained in the flesh. Now the Holy Spirit can be everywhere, in every believer, counseling us in all the needed areas of our lives.

If you are a believer, you have your own personal Counselor at your disposal. Rejoice!

Father, thanks for wanting me to hear you when you speak. Thanks for giving me the Holy Spirit. I’ll be listening! In Jesus’ Name, amen.
