A Bad Marriage, Gone Good

We must guard ourselves by not taking for granted or getting too busy for our spouse

Bonding Rituals
Breaking Faith

Scripture Reading: Malachi 2:15

Has not the Lord made them one? In flesh and spirit they are his. And why one? Because he was seeking godly offspring. So guard yourself in your spirit, and do not break faith with the wife of your youth.

Our scripture today warns us to be on guard and not break faith. If you took the time to read the entire second chapter, you would see the word “covenant” several times. God sees relationships through the lens of covenants. To break a covenant is a serious matter in God’s eyes. The people of Israel were upset because they felt that God was paying no attention to their prayers. God’s answer to their complaint reveals His value of covenants: “It is because the Lord is acting as the witness between you and the wife of your youth, because you have broken faith with her, though she is your partner, the wife of your marriage covenant” (Malachi 2:14).

I believe that at times Christ followers forget that God acts as our “witness.” In other words, no one else needs to testify or give their opinion. God is watching and will judge each of us…fairly! Let’s not take our marriage covenants lightly…as the world seems to do. We must “guard” ourselves by not taking for granted and/or getting too busy for our spouse. God sees your actions and lack of action – to build a strong bond in your marriage. We may try to kid ourselves or justify our lack of interest, but God is the witness to it all!

What have you done lately to strengthen the bond with your spouse? Do you have a weekly ritual that consistently fortifies your marriage covenant: A card or flowers for no special reason; breakfast in bed; consistent help with a chore around the house – are all examples of “bonding rituals!”

Father, I see how serious you take a marriage covenant. Please forgive me when I take it too lightly. In Jesus’ Name, amen.
