A Bad Marriage, Gone Good

Thoughts of unfair treatment in our relationships must be given to God – He knows what to do with them

Practice Kindness
Living Sacrifice

Scripture Reading: Romans 12:1

Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God–this is your spiritual act of worship.

It is easy to compartmentalize our lives…almost without thinking. This is good in some situations. It is great if we can leave our work at work and come home to truly engage with our family. Unfortunately, it is bad to compartmentalize our spiritual life. What I mean by that is to separate our walk with God from some areas of our lives. Jesus came to transform us…all areas of us and make us new people. For that to happen, we must guard against compartmentalizing.

It took me a while to realize I needed to practice my walk with God at home…first! I found it much easier to forgive others than I did to forgive my wife. I could return kindness to those around me, outside the home, but found it hard to be kind to Melanie when she wasn’t kind to me. The Holy Spirit finally got through all my compartmentalizing and showed me the hypocrisy of my heart. I’m far from perfect, but I know now…God wants to make me a man of God to my wife first – then I can live it everywhere!

Our scripture is a key focus for me. I daily remind myself that I’m a walking, living sacrifice. Life, both in the home and out in the world, is not about “me!” I practice the belief that God will defend me…that helped me not be so defensive! I practice allowing God to convince Melanie of marital “truth” … that helped me not to argue my point for hours! My feelings of “unfair treatment” are given to God – He knows what to do with them.

Father, I present myself, every compartment, to you. You are worthy of my sacrificial living. I trust your treatment of me! In Jesus’ Name, amen.
