How to be Used by God

All of us really do need to find truth; the question is: Can you handle the truth?

Find a Simon
In Your Face

Scripture Reading: Galatians 2:11-21

Key Verse: Galatians 2:11

When Peter came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he was clearly in the wrong.

The phrase, “in your face” could have come from our scripture for today. The apostle Paul is describing a time when the apostle Peter came to Antioch (a Gentile church existed there) to visit. Before other Jews arrived, Peter had been eating with the Gentiles. When these other Jews arrived, Peter drew back and separated himself from the Gentiles. The apostle Paul knew it was because Peter was fearful of these Jewish people’s opinions of him. Paul tells us that when he saw what was happening, he opposed Peter to his face!

We don’t know how the apostle Peter reacted to this confrontation. We do know that later in Peter’s writings, he compliments Paul on the wisdom in his letters to the churches. I believe that Paul became a “Simon” to Peter, and Peter grew more effective in his walk with God.

How would you have reacted had you been the apostle Peter? If done correctly and in love, would you have accepted this “in your face” comment about a behavior or action of yours? Do you have any experiences in your past that shows your openness to constructive criticism? Have you ever given a cold shoulder to someone because they spoke too honestly to you about you?

It is very difficult to judge one’s own heart. The Bible tells us that it is deceitful above all else (Jeremiah 17:9). In other words, it is most difficult to “get real” about ourselves. All of us really do need a “Simon” to help us find truth. The question is: Can you handle the truth?

Father, your Word promises that truth will set us free. I need your strength to accept truth, especially when it confronts a weakness of mine! Thanks for your loving approach to me. In Jesus’ Name, amen.
