He is All-Knowing
Scripture Reading: Psalm 147:1-4
Key Verse: Psalm 147:5
Great is our Lord and mighty in power;
his understanding has no limit.
Today we begin the study of the omniscience of God. One theologian defined it as the attribute of God by which He perfectly and eternally knows all things which can be known: past, present, and future. God knows how best to attain His desired ends. The inspired writings of the Psalmist David lay the foundation for this definition with the words: “His understanding has no limit.” Verse four in our suggested scripture reading makes the astounding proclamation: “He determines the number of the stars and calls them by name.” What a mind-blowing thought for mere mortals. Let’s think about some deductions that come from these verses.
First, if they are not true and God cannot name the stars and His knowledge is limited, then what power is available to us? What can we depend on from our God? Is “God” an appropriate title?
Second, if these verses are true, we can be awed by God’s existence and rest in His presence. What problems could you possibly have that a God of such sovereignty could not handle?
Third, His limitless knowledge comforts me as I am tempted to worry or feel perplexed. God has all the wisdom of the universe at His fingertips. James 1:5 reminds us that God is willing to share that wisdom with His children generously!
I find that I don’t always feel that wisdom flowing through me, but I must trust that it is. I must take God’s Word as a fact even when my limited understanding doesn’t get it.
“Father, I receive your wisdom for my life today! As I make decisions, I will trust that you are at work in me. In Jesus’ Name, amen.”
