Change Your Future

The real failure, in God’s economy, is when we grieve His heart with our lack of trust in His words!

Redefining Failure
They Worshiped Him

Scripture Reading: Matthew 28:8-10

Key Verses: Matthew 28:16-17

Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted.

The apostle Peter’s failure all started with the focus of Peter’s worship. If you remember, Peter was overly confident about his own power, strength, and ability to die for Jesus if necessary. The other disciples were not so quick to focus on their own abilities. Peter was following Jesus, but was still “worshipping” his own self confidence. Peter needed to change the focus of his worship to Jesus. Our scripture today describes the moment that happened. After the resurrection, the disciples were told to go to Galilee, to a mountain that Jesus had told them about. Once they had gathered, Jesus appeared and at that moment all worship was directed toward Jesus. They had all failed in their own strength and now they realized it would only be the power of Jesus that they dared to rely on!

Listen to some of Webster’s words in defining worship: to show devotion; love and admire. When we get this show of devotion, love and admiration pointed to the wrong source in our lives, failure is inevitable. Peter’s “true” failure happened as he stood before Jesus earlier, not as he stood in the courtyard. The fact that Peter didn’t believe what Jesus was saying when he predicted the failure was the failure. In God’s definition, failure is not our actions as much as our faith. He can work all things together for our good (Romans 8:28). Our “failures” don’t surprise God and send Him scrambling for solutions. He sees those coming before we are born. The real failure, in God’s economy, is when we grieve His heart with our lack of trust in His words!

If you’ve blown it recently, take another look, see if you consciously knew God’s Word on the issue and ignored it. God can fix everything else, but He can’t force us to follow Him!

Father, show me the true failures in my life, those times when I don’t truly worship you in spirit and truth! In Jesus’ Name, amen.
