The Abundant Life

God’s blessings will keep flowing as long as our hearts aren’t being drawn away from Him

Mud Slides

Scripture: 1 Timothy 6:6-10

But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

With all this talk about money, it would not be fair to forget about the possible downsides of having a lot of it. I’m calling these negatives the “mud slides” that can occur with the showers of blessings. If we go back to the beginning – when God first called a group of people to be “His” and follow Him – they were blessed with wealth. It usually wasn’t long until they developed a lax attitude concerning their relationship with God and started sinning against Him! God would take away their wealth (and freedom at times) wanting them to repent and rededicate their lives to Him. This cycle repeated itself several times during the Old Testament years.

As I have said repeatedly in this study – God wants to shower His people with blessings… both material and spiritual blessings. But He watches for the “mud slides.” When we are in danger of becoming complacent, or even corrupted by the love of money, He steps in. God’s Word for today tells us that people who fall in love with getting rich – for getting rich sake – “plunge” themselves into ruin and destruction. God’s absolute primary and greatest interest is in our spiritual growth and development. His showers of blessings will keep flowing as long as our “hearts” aren’t being drawn away from Him. He is the best one to judge when that starts to happen. He sees it before we do!

There are things we should be thinking about during a time of blessing in our lives. Things like: Am I praying with the same passion and diligence? Am I staying concerned and helpful to others? Am I hoarding or sharing? Let’s all be mindful of the “mud slides”!

Father, I want you to determine the level of blessings in my life! I trust your judgment and the purity of your love for me. Mold me and make me into the person you want me to be and that I ultimately want to be! In Jesus Name, amen.
